Call (315) 960-3940 and ask about an ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel consultation. The procedure is performed at this location. Consultations and procedures are scheduled separately.
What is ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release?
Carpal tunnel release relieves pressure on the median nerve by dividing the transverse carpal ligament. With Sonex Health’s UltraGuideCTR™ technology, the surgeon uses real-time ultrasound to visualize the ligament and surrounding structures while working through a small wrist incision. The procedure can be performed in an office setting with local anesthesia. Your care team will explain your individual anesthesia and procedure plan.
This is a surgical release, not an injection. Ultrasound guidance is one approach to carpal tunnel surgery; open and endoscopic techniques are other options to discuss.
Who may be a candidate?
An evaluation is the first step. Tell us about nighttime tingling, persistent numbness, dropping objects, or changes in hand strength. Not all hand numbness comes from carpal tunnel syndrome. Your clinician will consider your examination, symptom severity, prior treatment, medical history, and wrist anatomy. Ultrasound or nerve testing may be recommended when it will help guide care.
Treatment may include night splinting, activity changes, or an injection before surgery is considered. Significant nerve compression or progressive weakness may change the recommendation. Longstanding or severe nerve damage may not fully recover after release.
What happens at your consultation?
- Understand your symptoms. Bring prior test results, a medication list, and information about earlier treatment.
- Compare the options. Discuss nonsurgical care, surgical approaches, expected benefits, and risks.
- Plan your next step. If appropriate, arrange the procedure at New Hartford and review preparation, coverage, follow-up, and work restrictions.
Recovery and return to work
Recovery depends on your symptoms, nerve health, job demands, and healing. Ask about wound care, movement, lifting, driving, and return to work before the procedure. Desk work and heavy manual work may require different plans. Follow your own postoperative instructions and contact our team if recovery is not progressing as expected.
A small incision does not mean immediate unrestricted activity. Symptom improvement and nerve recovery vary, and no specific return-to-work date or complete symptom relief can be guaranteed.
Benefits, limitations, and risks
The small-incision approach and real-time imaging may appeal to patients seeking an office-based option. The right technique depends on your individual circumstances. Risks include infection, bleeding, injury to a nerve, tendon, or blood vessel, incomplete release, persistent or recurrent symptoms, anesthetic complications, and the need for additional surgery. Your surgeon will discuss alternatives and risks with you.
Common questions
Is this the same as a carpal tunnel injection?
No. An injection delivers medication. Carpal tunnel release divides a ligament to reduce pressure on the median nerve.
Can I have the procedure at any CNY Orthopedics office?
This procedure is performed at our New Hartford office. Call our team to arrange the appropriate consultation and confirm your appointment location.
Will insurance cover it?
Coverage, authorization requirements, and out-of-pocket costs vary. Our team can help you check the requirements for your individual plan before the procedure.
How soon can I be seen?
Call (315) 960-3940 for current availability. Same-day evaluation may be available across our offices, depending on the provider and location. A consultation does not mean the procedure will be performed that day.
