Concussion Care in Central New York

Evaluation, recovery planning, and return-to-activity guidance from our nonoperative sports medicine team.

When a head injury needs emergency care

Call 911 or go to an emergency department after a head injury if there is a seizure, repeated vomiting, worsening headache, increasing confusion, difficulty waking, slurred speech, weakness, poor coordination, unequal pupils, or double vision. Do not wait for an office appointment.

Concussion evaluation with our sports medicine team

CNY Orthopedics provides nonoperative sports medicine care with Gorav Simlote, DO, who is board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine and has a particular focus on concussion care. He works alongside our physicians, advanced practice providers, and athletic training team.

Call to arrange an evaluation after a suspected concussion or to discuss ongoing symptoms. Tell our team when the injury occurred, whether you have already been evaluated, and what symptoms or activity limitations you are experiencing.

What symptoms can look like

Symptoms may include headache, dizziness, light or noise sensitivity, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, mood changes, or disrupted sleep. They may appear later and can change during recovery. An evaluation helps guide next steps; an online symptom list cannot establish a diagnosis.

A plan for school, work, and sports

Your visit includes a review of the injury, symptoms, prior concussions, previous evaluations, and the activities you need to return to. Bring any emergency-department notes, testing reports, medication information, and school, work, or sports forms.

Athletes with a suspected concussion should leave play and should not return the same day. Return to sport requires clinician approval and a supervised progression. Advance only as directed; stop and contact your care team if symptoms return or new symptoms develop.
